Luke's First Signs

We weren't sure at first, but now after a week it is clear that Luke
is using his first sign pretty consistently. Whenever he is sitting in
the high chair, he signs "milk" when gets thirsty. We give him water,
and he stops doing the sign for awhile. When the need arises, he signs
again and gets his drink :)

It's very clear that he knows what it means - if we try to give him
water before he asks for it, he will usually reject it. But when he
signs, he takes it enthusiastically every time. Pretty cool to
communicate with a nine month old baby!

The second top tooth poked out yesterday, so now he has 4 teeth in all.

Luke Giggling Video

This video is from last month - it shows Luke giggling with his mommy and big brother.

Here's a cute video of Luke learning to clap:

Chatter

Luke is a chatterbox this morning. He's learned to say ba-ba in
addition to mama and has been practicing all morning. He definitely
addresses Danielle as mama - I think the plan is to use baba for Theo,
at least until he can sign it or say "eo".

Luke signs

Luke just may have made some signs - we're pretty sure he was trying to sign "more" and he reacted in the happiest way when we seemed to understand what he wanted.

He's learning so much every day, it's no wonder that he has no desire to sleep or nap.

Theo encounters Santa

Theo and I were at the mall today and there was a Santa Claus you
could take pictures with (for a price, of course). Theo's jaw dropped
2 feet when he saw Santa - then he got all shy and hugged my leg. The
Santa waved, and theo waved back with a shy "hi".

I asked theo if he wanted to meet Santa, but the response was a strong
No. We passed the Santa a few times but Theo's courage did not get any
stronger.

Later, after Santa had gone on break/returned to the North Pole, Theo
wondered aloud whether it was the real Santa or a guy who was just
dressed up like him. He settled on the idea that it was the real
Santa. Every year, that's going to be a tougher and tougher sell.

Luke is crawling

Here is a photo of Luke crawling for the first time, an army crawl to
get a Superman mask that he wanted.

I think our lives just changed a little bit...

Theo Crawling at 8 months

Luke's not quite crawling yet - he's just at the frustrated part of the process. All he can manage to do is rotate in a circle, a la Homer Simpson.

Theo was army-crawling by 7 months - here's a flashback clip of him in March 2005:

Saturday Brunch

Yesterday we had brunch at Karen and Josh's house, along with Janna
and Dana and Genevieve. Here is a great photo of Theo and Connor:

Transition

Check out the web site for the transition: http://www.change.gov/

I still get a little startled when I see the news and re-realize that the election is over and the good guys won. For some reason it's still not sinking in...

The campaign also posted this Flickr set of photos from behind the scenes on Election Night.

President Obama!!

It's over!!!!
200 EVs projected so far. Add in the sure states of California, Hawaii, and Washington state and we have 270+. Right now, it's looking like it could be a landslide.

Just Voted!

I just went and cast my vote for Obama. The election officials in my neighborhood had it running extremely smoothly. I was able to walk in and out with no line at all. Danielle went this morning and had little trouble as well.

Meanwhile, in Pennsylvania, my father-in-law took this amazing photo:

Election Day... so close...

I think that when this election is finally over, my productivity is going to shoot up. Between the RSS feeds of pollster.com and fivethirtyeight.com, a political stat junkie like me has WAY too much information to digest.

Make sure you go out tomorrow and vote and make history!

Tooth!

Luke's first tooth is starting to poke out - right out in front on the bottom gum. His eyes are still this slate gray color that can look blue, green or brown, depending on the light - it's very interesting. With his fuzzy white-blond hair, he looks like a California baby!

Theo is getting ramped up for Halloween. For the past few months, he sais he wanted to be Batman again. Then over the past few weeks, he got on a Wizard of Oz kick, so on Sunday for the Halloween parade he wanted to be the Wicked Witch of the West. I had some reservations about that, but he was very cute running around in his cape (repurposed from the Batman costume) and witch hat, with a cardboard broom, cackling and repeating lines from the movie - "I'll get you my pretty and you're little dog, too!" and "Scarecrow, wanna play ball?". He knows almost all her lines by heart.

Then yesterday Aunt Alex sent some glow-in-the-dark vampire teeth in the mail. All of a sudden, he's a vampire! (Although he has NO IDEA what a vampire is!) Luckily, the same Batman cape works for that, too. Now we just have to teach him some "vampire" sayings...

Help2Go Updates

Today, I transitioned Help2Go from the Joomla CMS to a CMS I made myself over the past week. Should make things much easier to update, and I like having the control. Why Joomla didn't have a better upgrade path is beyond me...

Two articles I wrote last week:

Should I install Windows XP Service Pack 3?

Wiimote Whiteboard on my Macbook Pro

I've linked to the Johnny Lee's work before, but here he gives a TedTalk about the Wii Hacks he's created. The whiteboard was of special interest to me, since schools would love to have this technology in every classroom.

Using the Mac software, my Wiimote, and an IR Pen I made riffing off of these instructions (and some parts from Radio Shack) I was able to get it to work with my Macbook Pro. Can't wait to show it to one of my client schools...

Brinsingr

Finished Brinsingr last night - I loved this book. It's the kind of story and characters that you just fall into, never wanting the story to end. Looking forward to #4!

Palin-Biden debate

Based on her performance with Couric, people were expecting her to just implode - that wasn't a realistic expectation. I think her handlers made her memorize 10-12 mini-speeches, and when a question even remotely touched the proper subject, she pulled out one of the speeches. She basically ignored the questions. The best example was when she pulled out her education mini-speech, when nobody was talking or asking about education at the time.

Biden won the debate, and she exceeded expectations simply by not falling down. CNN had those stupid focus group dials, and it was interesting that every time she spoke, the men in the group reacted positively, while the women reacted positively to Biden. People may like her, but I'm not sure her gosh-golly-gee act will actually turn into votes.

Sweetie

Best baby?

We really luckednout with Luke. He's cute, he eats, he sleeps, he's
always happy. Did I mention he's cute?

He's sitting up like a champ and starting to vocalize much more.
Especially razz type noises this week. He grabs everything in sight,
which is a challenge since Theo is in a Lego playing phase. He's
almost to the point where he can scoot around. He definitely moves
around his crib on his tummy, though he can't control his destination
yet.

His favorite thing to do is to stand up and bounce up and down. He just loves it! And he can really stand up with very little support. This is a strong little baby...

Obviously Fiorina didn't mean this statement, but it is telling how far they will go to protect Palin. After all, isn't the President of the United States its chief executive?

Anniversary

Theo got his 4-year old shots this week, which has made him sad and cranky. You get 4 shots, 2 in each arm, and the tetanus one really hurts. He was VERY brave during the shots. On top of that, he got a reaction which eventually led to a fever. He stayed home from school yesterday and got better. It's very strange to see him with little energy - he's always running around and climbing on things (people) so it's a little jarring to see him quietly watching TV.

Luke is getting over a skin rash - the docs say it's a virus, so it will pass out of his system soon.

Our anniversary passed quietly yesterday, as usual. We'll try to go out to dinner this weekend, just the two of us. :)

Profiles in Cuteness

How can you resist this face? Luke has the most adorable profile...

Welcome to the new blog!

Welcome! I finally added Luke to the family photo above :)

I got sick of having to administer the blog on the old server, and since Wordpress (the blog software) was way out of date, and I had no luck upgrading it, here we are.

The old blog posts can be viewed here: http://www.sodani.com/index.php - I'll eventually move all the old blog posts here, but that's a project for another day...
